Chinese School, 19th Century View of Whampoa Anchorage and Island. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1810, depicting several vessels displaying American, British, and European flags, some with masts lowered while waiting to be loaded with cargo, the nine-stage pagoda in the town of Whampoa at the center of the painting, 18 x 23 1/2 in., in a later gilt gesso frame. Condition: Relined, scattered retouch to background sky and c.l. edge, minor craquelure. Literature: This painting is illustrated in The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, by Carl L.
