Silver Butter Plate, Samuel Edwards (1705-1762), Boston, c. 1730, the broad rim with a slight curve above the shallow curve to the flat bottom including a center point, the rim is engraved with the Jackson arms in a sheaf and scroll cartouche and also their crest on the opposite rim. In script on the bottom it reads "E. Jackson," and has the touchmark of Samuel Edwards, dia. 5 15/16 in., approx. 4 troy oz. Provenance: The publication American Silver 1655-1825 in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Vol. I, plate 199, by Kathryn Buhler, pictures, describes, and gives the provenance of an identical plate, (which together with this lot formed a pair) described as "a pr. butter plates," and listed in the inventory of Edward Jackson's estate taken in 1757. According to this publication, "the second is still in the family." This lot is from the Guy Lowell family siblings. Mr. Guy Lowell gifted the other of the pair to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in the 1950s. He was the designer of the present Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, located on Huntington Avenue
