Fritz Thaulow (Norwegian, 1847-1906) Over the Bridge/A Winter Landscape Signed "Fritz Thaulow" l. r. Oil on canvas, 25 3/4 x 32 in. (65.4 x 81.2 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure. N.B. Thaulow always wanted to be a painter, but originally wished to paint only marine scenes. He studied in Copenhagen under C.F.Sorenson and Hans Gude, and then moved to Paris to study. Although he did show some marine works at the Paris Salon, he was not particularly well received early on. It was only when he moved back to Oslo and started to paint the local landscape that Thaulow achieved success. He became best known for capturing the essence of moving water and reflections as demonstrated here.
