Lever-Operated Clown Juggler Automaton, Germany, circa 1880, with grimacing papier-mache face, upturned nose, black glass eyes, molded eyebrows, circus makeup and painted hair with a ball on spring at the center of his crown, sitting with outstretched arms on grained and checkered paper-covered base, a lever at the side causing the figure to turn his head and raise each arm alternately as a large red pom-pom revolves on a wire to simulate juggling, in the original printed cotton one-piece outfit trimmed with ribbons, lace and neck ruff, ht. 16 in.
