Venice, Views, Georg Hoefnagel (1542-1601) Augusti apud Venetos Templi D. Marci Accuratissima Effiguratio , [and] Palatii Senatorii aupd Venetos Conflagratio, 1578 . Braun & Hogenberg, c. 1578. Single folio sheet with two panels, copper-plate engravings, hand-colored, matted, in a modern frame, old folds and slight rumpling, visible closed tear outside the top margin, 20 x 15 in. visible through the mat opening. In this interesting juxtaposition of images, the left panel shows strolling Venetians conversing in Saint Mark's Square, with the basilica in the background. The right panel shows the dramatic fire at the Doge's Palace in 1577.
