Continental School, 16th Century Style Portrait of Hartmann von Hartmann Unsigned, sitter identified in an inscription in Latin purported to have been on the reverse of the original canvas. Oil on canvas mounted to Masonite, 26 1/2 x 22 1/4 in. (67.2 x 56.7 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, old retouch, small area of lifting at l.r. corner, fine stable craquelure overall, minor surface grime. N.B. The inscription referenced above is reproduced and also translated in labels affixed to the frame backing paper. The label states that Hartmann von Hartmann was a knight and chief commander of the Swiss troops in the service of Henry IV, King of France.
