$3,998
Georgian Channel Islands Silver Porringer or Loving Cup, Jersey, 18th century, Jean or Edouard Gavey, maker, with two scrolled handles, engraved armorial above a narrow applied girdle, circular foot, and gold-washed interior, ht. 5 1/8 in., approx. 17.1 troy oz. N.B. According to Silver in the Channel Islands by Frederick Cohen and Nicholas du Quesne Bird, the mark "IG" beneath a crown within a shield was in use from 1715 to c. 1775, causing the authors to believe both Jean and his son Edouard used the same mark. The mark has previously been misattributed to Jean de Gruchy, a Jersey clockmaker working in the mid-18th century, as well as Joseph Goldthwait(e) (1706-1780), a Boston silversmith. Provenance: The Estate of Charles P. Fisher.
