Important Rhinoceros Horn "Magnolia" Cup, China, 17th/18th century, tapered ovoid form, depicting a deeply hollowed magnolia, the exterior sides carved with branching magnolia blossoms intertwined with branches of lychee, the branches forming the reticulated handle are tied at the base with a magnolia branch, the horn of an even, rich caramel color deepening to a darker brown at the center of the cup and the ends of exterior bound branches, with stand, ht. 7 in. Provenance: A small New England museum. Note: The combination of magnolia and lychee symbolizes wishes for a rich and noble home with many sons.
