Woven Wool and Cotton Coverlet Depicting the United States Capitol Building, America, c. 1846, two-piece, double weave, navy blue and white coverlet depicting a central field with twelve images of the capitol building in Washington, D.C., with a balance scale and stars above and inscriptions below each building "Capitol in Washington 1846," surrounded by leafy vines, the buildings separated with floral medallion and quatrefoil borders, enclosed on three sides with leaf borders and fringe, (minor imperfections), approx. 78 x 88 in. Literature: This coverlet is pictured in Coverlets and the Spirit of America , by Melinda Zongor (Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., Pennsylvania, 2002), pp. 124-25. Zongor writes: "Field pattern motifs turned 90 degrees like this are unusual."
