Daniel King Boxwood and Brass Circumferentor, Salem, Massachusetts, c. 1758, the boxwood instrument with engraved semicircular scale with inner/outer markings 0-180 and center scale 180-360, the whale bone plaque reading Daniel King Fecit 1758 , above the trough compass with paper dial having inked S/N , representing north south, shaped blued needle with brass hub, brass alidade with sighting circles attaches to the threaded post with a knurled screw, and a brass staff mount underneath, lg. 7 1/4 x 3 7/8 in. Provenance: Reportedly found in northwest Pennsylvania, consignor purchased from David Geiger Antiques, Meadville, Pennsylvania. Note: Only a few examples of Daniel King's works have survived, including a quadrant signed Daniel King Fecit Salem March ye 24 1766 , in the collection of the Maine Maritime Museum, and the late M.V. Brewington of the Peabody Museum in Salem, describes an unusual semi-circumferentor, made of boxwood, measuring 6 inches in length, having a flat bar needle with a brass bearing contained in a recess of about 4 inches. The compass card was executed in black ink, inscribed "Daniel King, Salem fecit 1767."
