French, late 19th century. French painted and gilt metal mounted table casket, dresser or jewelry box, the square form in blue ground, the top decorated with winged mermaids flanking fruit filled urns and centered with cartouche enclosing a merman, the sides painted with griffins and scrolling foliage united by ribbon tied drapery, the whole raised on four downswept legs terminating in paw feet. The interior with removable maroon silk quilted pillow. Marked to the underside in red 'H'. Approximate height 4.3", width 6" (foot to foot), depth 6". Provenance: From the Estate of Mary L.
